Hall of Fame Recognition for Mustangs
The Nebraska Coaches Association welcomes
former Millard North Mustangs to the Nebraska Wrestling Hall
of Fame!! This spring Former Mustang wrestler and
coach, Brauman Creighton, was inducted as a
competitor to the Hall of Fame.
Brauman
went to High School at Millard North High School in Omaha
where he was a two time state medalists, going 35-0 and
winning the State title his senior year in 1994,thus setting
the Millard North record for most wins in a season. Brauman
went on to even greater accomplishments at the University of
Nebraska-Omaha. Brauman was a four-time all-American
(1996-99), and two-time national champion (1998-99). He is
third in career wins at UNO with an impressive 151-27-0
record. He was also a two-time academic all-American
(1996-97).
Brauman followed his stellar wrestling career by
contributing as coach. He was co-coach with Mel Masek at his
alma-mater Millard North for two seasons finishing as high
as second in class A. He has gone on to coach at both at the
collegiate and high school levels in the state of
California.
Going into the Hall of Fame with Brauman Creighton is former
Millard North Coach, Mel Masek.
Coach
Masek has spent over 50 years in the sport as a competitor
and coach. Coach Masek began his life-long love of the sport
as a competitor for South High School where his success
there took him to UNO where he competed in both wrestling
and football. After a short period of time coaching at
Underwood Iowa, Coach Masek spent the next 23 years as the
head wrestling coach at Omaha Benson High School. There, he
coached seven different state champions and his team
finished the 1971 season as state runner-ups. After having
retired from coaching for several years, Mel stepped in to
help guide the Millard North Wrestling Program. In his five
seasons as the head coach of the Mustangs, he finished in
the top 3 in three of those years, producing a total of
eight individual titles, including the 2001 season in which
he had 5 state finalists, 4 champions, and the team
runner-up trophy. Coach Masek has been a long time member
and contributor to both the NSWCA and the Metro Wrestling
Coaches Association.
NSWCA Honors Heinke Family
Congratulations to the Steve Heinke family
for receiving the NSWCA award for Wrestling Family of the
Year! Steve and Shari Heinke and their children have done a
terrific job of supporting wrestling here at Millard North
and are very deserving of this award.
NSAA All State Wrestlers
Congratulations to Millard North juniors
Alex Edmonds and Dan Anderson for being named as
NSAA Academic All-State members.
2007 Annual Wrestling Banquet

Booster Club Members, wrestlers, friends and
coaches gathered at the Georgetown club to remember the
season highlights and honor all Mustang wrestlers for their
individual and team accomplishments. Booster Club
Board Member Bobbi Allgood conferred $500 scholarships to
four graduating seniors (pictured, l-r): Wade Gilmer,
Josh Heinke, Dan Engstrom and Ben Heinke. During
the Banquet Coach White paid tribute to former Mustang
Wrestler R.J. Nebe, who passed away suddenly earlier in the
day (see story below). Awards were also granted by the
coaches to wrestlers for achievements during the season:

Congratulations on a great season!
Former
Mustang Wrestler Passes Away
R.J. Nebe, a well known figure in the Omaha
wrestling community, died in March 2007 from
complications of leukemia at the age of 41. A long
time coach with Skutt High School's wrestling program, R.J. was
also the color commentator on State High School and UNO
Wrestling broadcasts. R.J. began his scholastic
wrestling career at Millard North and was a two-time state
placer for the Mustangs in 1982/83. He went on to
become a Division II All-American at UNO from 1985-88 and
finished second on the Maverick's all-time win list with
153. He was also a Division I All American at 177 lbs
in 1988. In 1999, R.J. Nebe
was inducted into the
NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame. Also in
1999, The Mustang Wrestling Booster Club chose to
honor these achievements with the creation
of the R.J. Nebe Award,
given annually to the most improved wrestler of the season.
A memorial service was held March
23rd at the Sapp Fieldhouse at the University of Nebraska at
Omaha.
State Championship

The
Mustangs brought 12 state qualifiers to the Qwest Center and
finished in 11th place out of 24 teams in Class A.
Junior Brian Newton made the walk of champions and
finished 2nd at 189 lbs. Senior co-captain Erik
Vance closed out his Millard North Wrestling Career with
a 5th place medal at 135 lbs. Two freshman showed that
the future for Mustang wrestling looks bright with medals at
112 lbs (Gil Allgood, 4th) and 140 lbs (Austin
Edmonds, 6th).

DISTRICT CHAMPS!

Millard North walked away from Omaha
North High School with the A-2 District Title and 12
state qualifiers. Gil Allgood, Josh Heinke, Erik Vance,
and Brian Newton won individual championships. Senior
Ben Heinke may have put forth the most courageous effort
by qualifying for state after severely injuring his ankle
earlier in the week.

Metro Dual Championship

The Millard North Mustangs finished fourth in
the Metro Dual Tournament in the final regular season
varsity event. Mustang wrestlers Gill Allgood, Erik
Vance, and Brian Newton (pictured) went undefeated on the day.
Norfolk Invite
Millard North put 4 in the finals, placed 12
individual wrestlers, and finished 4th in the team race at
the Norfolk invitational. Junior Brian Newton won the 189 lb
title for the 2nd time in as many weeks. Freshman Anthony
Brunetti placed 6th replacing the injured Josh Heinke at
130.
Lexington Invitational
The mustangs battled weather and a strong
field of 14 to finish 3rd at the Higgins invitational in
Lexington. Another strong team performance was
highlighted by a championship performance by Brian Newton.
On the JV side, Dan Engstrom and Andy Miller cruised to
Championships to lead the team.
Norfolk Invite
Millard North put 4 in the finals, placed 12
individual wrestlers, and finished 4th in the team race at
the Norfolk invitational. Junior Brian Newton won the 189 lb
title for the 2nd time in as many weeks. Freshman Anthony

130.
Gains for Mustangs at Metro Conference Championship

The Mustangs put together a
solid team effort at this year's Metro Conference
tournament, placing thirteen wrestlers in the fourteen
weight classes. The team finished third in the stacked field
of sixteen.
Big Win vs. Pius
The 'Stangs faced Class A rival Lincoln
Pius for an important dual on Parent's Night at Millard
North. The team started strong with a pair of pins from
the Heinke brothers and Freshman Gil Algood produced a
clutch pin in the final match to seal a 37-33 victory.
The Mustangs also benefited from a key pin by Wade Gilmer at
215.

Although no Team Score was
kept, the Freshman showed the future of the Mustangs is
bright. Wrestlers at the upper weights were especially
successful and Matt Lenaugh (215) led the team with a 2-0
record.
Millard West Invitational
The Mustangs came back from
the Holiday break primed for action and finished a solid 6th
out of 13 teams. Josh Heinke (130) and Brian
Newton (189) paced the Mustangs with second place
finishes and 4 others finished with 4-1 records.

South Sioux City Invite
The Mustangs made their annual trek to
S. Sioux City hoping to improve on last year's second place finish.
Millard North once again finished second to Sioux City North (IA)
with 203 team points. The Mustangs placed seven wrestlers in
the finals and fielded three individual
champions in Gil Allgood (112), Ben Heinke (125) and
Brian Newton (189).
Millard Duals
It
was a tough night for the Mustangs as they fell to their two Millard
Schools rivals. Senior Co-Captain Erik Vance (135) led
the team with falls in both his matches. Millard South handled
the Mustangs 63-9 in a match that featured wins by Ben Heinke and
Vance. The Mustangs also fell to Millard West 39-32 despite
winning 7 matches. Victorious Mustangs included Gill Allgood,
Ben Heinke, Josh Heinke, Vance, Dan Engstrom, Dan Anderson and Alex
Edmonds.

East West Dual

Millard North played host to the East
West Dual in which 6 school battled it out for early bragging rights
in class A. The Mustangs had some high points with four 3rd
place finishers but the team finished 6th overall. The Mustang
placers were Gil Allgood (112), Austin Edmonds (140, pictured), Alex Edmonds
(152) and Brian Newton (189).

The Mustangs traveled south to
take on Plattsmouth in a clash of classes A and B. The
Mustangs were led by pins from Gil Allgood, Taylor Vaiskunas and
Brian Newton as they pulled out the dual match victory.
Vern Ekfelt Annual Tournament

Millard North asserted its depth with a
fourth place finish at the annual Vern Ekfelt Tournament at Omaha North
HS. 112 lb. freshman Gil Allgood (pictured) and 130 lb.
Senior Josh Heinke had the best showings among the Mustangs with
second place medals. Other placers included place Ben
Heinke (5th), Erik Vance (4th), Alex Edmonds (6th),
Drew Dober (4th), Taylor Vaughn (4th), Brian Newton
(3rd).
JV and Freshman Teams See First Action
The JV team headed out to Wymore and
scored big with a third place finish, paced by first place finishes
from Anthony Brunetti, Dan Engstrom and Dan Anderson. The
Freshman Team Competed in the Norfolk Invitational Tournament and
also performed well, with first place finishes from Brandon Lawver,
Matt Slingwine and Arturo Cruz. Congratulations to all
placers!
Annual
Holiday Youth Tournaments

The Booster Club once again hosted the
22nd Annual
Holiday Wrestling Classic. The overall team trophies were
taken by the Golden Eagles (1st place), KWAA (2nd), Sherman
Challengers (3rd), and Central City Kansas City (4th).

Wrestle-Off

The Annual Blue-Silver
Wrestle-Off took place Tuesday, November 20, 2006 at Millard
North High School. Fans were given a sneak preview at the
Mustang's upcoming season. A highlight featured seniors Erik
Vance (l) and Josh Heinke (r) squaring off in a hard fought match.
2007 Senior Captains Named

Coach White announced the new Senior
Captains at the 2006 Blue silver wrestle-off. They are Josh Heinke,
Erik Vance and Ben Heinke. They are ready to lead the
Mustangs to another strong season!
